Moments Captured in Time

The photo was taken at the official opening of the Sunrise Way drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility in Toowoomba. Doug, the inaugural Chair of the Sunrise Way board worked nights and weekends over 11 years leading a group of volunteers while managing his business responsibilities to bring the AUS2.0 million project to life. The Governor General of Australia the Hon Sir Michael Jeffery AC, CVO, MC performed the opening. SW celebrated 10years in July 2024. It is achieving excellent outcomes for residents. Voluntary Greenhouse Challenge program
The Australian Prime Minister John Howard launched the Voluntary Greenhouse Challenge program in 1996 to encourage businesses to reduce emissions. The photo shows Doug giving his acceptance speech at an event introducing new business participants at Parliament House Canberra in 1997. Between 1997 and 2005 Doug and his leadership team reduced emissions by 34% per tonne cast and reduced energy costs by AUS$1.0million per year. Water consumption was also reduced by 40% over two years. Daily business reporting and real time monitoring of energy and water identified areas of savings along with investments in new technology.

In 2005 Doug was approached by the Chairman of the start-up organization The Australian Green Infrastructure Council (AGIC) to be the inaugural CEO. Doug accepted this challenge. It was to be a world’s first undertaking. He was the only employee. The idea was to replicate the Green Building Council’s sustainability program and apply it to Australia’s Major civil engineering projects involving rail, road, sea and airports and transmission grid development projects. In 3.5 years, assisted by the board and volunteers, he opened an office in Brisbane ‘s CBD, and grew the organization and its membership. Authors were appointed to document best practice approaches to the design, construction, and operation of major civil projects. Project trials were conducted in all Australian states except Tasmania and South Australia to fine tune the assessment criteria. The Hon Antony Albanese, Australia’s Federal Minister for Infrastructure at the time launched the renamed organization The Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) and it’s IS rating scheme at Parliament House Canberra. Doug was a special guest at the 10 year celebratory gala anniversary dinner where he learnt ISCA was involved with over AUS$220 billion of national projects.(www. iscouncil.org)
